What is Hakomi?
Hakomi Somatic Psychotherapy begins by turning our awareness inside in compassionate curiosity. Turning inwards in mindfulness, we begin to explore our inner landscape, familiarizing ourselves with the different parts that form our sense of self. Cultivating a state of self-observation allows us to learn about the needs, wounds, longings, and beliefs that our inner parts hold, clarifying the many forms in which they help us navigate the world. For many, it's the first time they get to experience themselves in a way that is not driven by the cognitive mind and its narrative.
Slowly, we make space for the wisdom held in our body to emerge. In Hakomi, we pay close attention to the movements, impulses, gazes, sensations, and qualities that might be connected to a core belief -- about ourselves or the world -- that was formed a long time ago. We open the space to learn how these beliefs formed structures that are trying to protect and keep us safe, even if today they seem to be getting in the way of our self-realization. The goal, then, is not to change, get rid of, or override those parts. Transformation is about learning and integrating new experiences, creating more possibilities from which to be ourselves, form relationships, and navigate life.
Sessions are guided by your curiosity. We make space to explore what is important or alive for you. What happens then is a journey that might take us to unexpected places. At the center of Hakomi lies a deep trust that an inner wisdom is constantly guiding us towards healing and wellbeing. By staying mindful, curious, and open, we allow that wisdom to show us the way.
